Stepping Back to Get Some Distance
Week 12December 22, 2024
It’s been two weeks since my last post, and staying consistent has been tough—traveling doesn’t help! But that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been progress. I spent 10 days in Tasmania, mostly disconnected—no laptop, no electricity most of the time. It was an incredible experience, and the wildlife there is amazing. If you’re looking for a rural escape, I highly recommend it. Being away gave me the chance to think about REboard and clear my head. Some changes are coming, but let’s go step by step.
Before Tasmania
In my last post, I talked about stepping up outreach efforts, and here’s what I got done before heading off:
- Instagram Posts: I created nine posts to make REboard look more professional when prospects check us out. One of them included a demo video, but it didn’t turn out as great as I’d hoped—it’s hard to adapt computer demos for Instagram. I’ll redo it once I’ve added more features.
- Network Feedback: I shared the page and REboard’s progress with my close network to get their input. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. Moments like these remind me how lucky I am to have such supportive people around me.
After that, I went back to coding:
- Bug Fixes: I tackled some bugs friends had pointed out and improved the login and signup flows.
- New Feature: I added a feature to show the balance history of linked accounts. While the idea was simple, the GoCardless API only provides the current balance and transactions—not a balance history. I had to calculate it manually by backtracking transactions, which is computationally heavy for accounts with lots of data. In the future, I’ll optimize this by saving snapshots of balances with timestamps and calculating the rest as needed.
Reflecting in Tasmania
The trip gave me time to think more holistically about REboard and my own life. Until now, I’ve been working in the business, doing everything myself to keep costs low. But this approach has some major challenges:
- I can’t do everything on my own anymore—progress will be slow, and it’s tough to balance product development with outreach.
- If I want REboard to grow quickly, I need to focus on scaling it and delivering value to as many people as possible.
Living with my sister in Melbourne has helped keep my costs down, but I don’t like not contributing to rent. Plus, I’ve realized that to scale REboard, I need to work on the business—planning, building a team, and finding resources.
Adjusting Course
With this in mind, I’ve decided to tweak my approach:
- Building a Pitch Deck and Business Plan: I’m creating a five-year plan for REboard and will start reaching out to incubators, angel investors, and VCs to secure funding.
- Cold Outreach and Product-Market Fit: I’ll continue reaching out to potential customers to secure early adopters and validate REboard’s fit in the market.
- Exploring Internships: I’ve started looking for an internship to gain corporate experience, expand my network, and make REboard a more attractive investment opportunity.
This Week’s Goals
Here’s what I’m focusing on this week:
- Finalizing the pitch deck and business plan.
- Creating a new, phone-friendly demo video for Instagram.
- Starting development on the “add tenant from uploaded contracts” feature, which will use AI to pull tenant details from contracts. This will make customer onboarding simple and cost-effective.
Looking Ahead
This is a small adjustment to the course, but the mission stays the same: scaling REboard and delivering value to property managers. It’s all about taking it one step at a time and keeping the momentum going. Let’s see what next week brings!
